Columbia Icefield
A great natural wonder, this “hydrological apex”
is only one of two in the world. Estimated at 125 sq
miles and reaching depths of 1270 ft., the icefield
feeds four of the continent’s major river systems.
Meltwaters from it flow to three different oceans (the
Pacific, Arctic, and Atlantic). As you take a tour in
a custom designed snow coach, make sure to take a look
at the markers placed throughout the icefield. Each
one indicates how much the glacier has receded this
century.
The Great Divide
For an interesting day excursion, take a picnic and
travel west of Lake Louise to the Great Divide. This
is the geographic point where all waters either flow
west to the Pacific, or east to the Atlantic. This phenomenon
can be seen first hand at the picnic area as the creek
separates mid-flow.
Icefields Parkway
Why not take a drive through some of the most beautiful
scenery the world has to offer? One of the most scenic
highway’s to meander down is the Icefields Parkway.
This spectacular route travels past unforgettable sights
such as the Bow Summit, Saskatchewan River Crossing,
Sunwapta Falls, Athabasca Falls and Lake Louise.
Lake
Louise Ski Area
Encompassing more than 4000 square acres and 4 mountain
faces, this resort is one of Canada's largest. Over
100 runs ensure that there's space for everyone, and
11 lifts guarantee that you can get there easily. Each
lift connects to easy and difficult runs, so the slopes
are available to skiers of all skill levels. There's
even a snow-making system to serve as a back-up when
Mother Nature isn't fully cooperating. Skiers and snowboarders
are both welcome and the area is located just minutes
from Lake Louise Village.
Gondola Rides – the ultimate Rocky Mountain
Views
For visitors who want to see a peak panorama without
a great deal of exertion, this is the attraction for
you. Pick a clear day, bring your camera, and wear sturdy
shoes. Short hiking trails radiate from the gondolas’
highest points. The Lake Louise Gondola will ''fly''
you 1,075 meters (3,526 feet) up Mount Whitehorn for
dramatic views across the Bow Valley to the Chateau,
Lake Louise, Victoria Glacier and Valley of the Ten
Peaks. Open June 1 to mid-September.
